This interview is a special one, which I was really looking forward to, because I know less about the spanish speaking imaging community, it’s stars and I also never worked  in a spanish speaking market myself. So a brand new experience for me and the blog team.

Thanks to Raul Segura for making it happen and connecting us with one of the leading spanish speaking imaging talents: Leandro Adrogué. (This interview will also be available in spanish on Raul’s Spanish radio imaging blog.) This is the first radio imaging interview, posted on two blogs in two different languages.

Let’s dive right into it and meet Leandro, who started radio back in 1992 in Argentina and now works for Catalonian radio network Grup Flaix from his studio in Barcelona. Check out Leandro’s innovative imaging style, some pics from his studio and more.

1. Which production system do you use and why?

I use Pro Tools.

First, because for me, is the most stable production tool.

In my study I produce sound identity, i pre & post production sound design.

Also Pro Tools is the standard you find in any professional sound room, where once usually go to joint productions and this allows me to import my sessions to work better.

2. What are your favorite plugIns (including screenshots)?

My favorites are the Waves plugins.

In some cases, I usually work with templates created previously, especially for schemes and previous master.

In regions, depending on the production use, but also in some cases doubling tracks labor to work the depth of field of voice, cutting frequencies and find a sound only identify with the brand.

3. How do you schedule your work (priorities…)?

Everything depends on how it comes, because often the production is now for now, and there is no provision, especially in radio.

On TV, when I have to put music and sound to a program, I work with enough time to get involved with the content.

I usually work without prior indications or musical tone, I get the program, look closely for the most important points which I want to highlight with music and effects and then going to the room.

In FX, when I get background music for video, once I have indications of how they imagine, sometimes, I have free choice to propose a style…Always visualize, interpret, imagine and I get to produce.

4. What do you love about working as producer at Grup Flaix?

In the past two years I have argued that whenever possible I want to work in productions that involve me motivated, sometimes I have proposed to produce content that does not motivate me or wanted me tied to this production and have ruled without thinking money. I think it was a good choice.

Currently working in different formats, both young and adult. I like them all and they motivate me, because this is coupled to produce in another language that is not my native language and also adds value to the daily differential.

The main radio stations in Catalonia, FlaixFm i Ràdio Flaixbac, Flaix Eivissa.

The transmission of the most important football club Barcelona, TdP, in Catalunya Radio.

Also in video sound design for various media formats.

5. What is the best Pro Tools or production trick anybody should know?

In sound design do not use shortcuts. On radio and usually have a bus master preset for certain voices, especially with Eq, because in some cases doubled vocal tracks cutting frequencies in some, looking prescence give more to the harmonics of the voice with which you are working at that time. If the session is short, I automate effects, but usually create templates to produce various jingles within the same session.

I only use Protools, currently working on a Protools10 and MacPro 8 core with C24 or a 003, or an iMac i5 with a 002 interface.

6. How do you get inspired and what do you use as source of creativity?

At all times I want to feel a listener over the radio, I should not forget to work a brand, content, a product.

I think where you can hear that production is not the same advertising a promotion, the announcement of a concert, a medley or a jingle identification. Everyone needs to have their identity and seek to impact the message or feelings that are intended.

7. Who were your radio production idols, who influenced your work as a producer?

In my 14 years, I heard “The 92”, the radio was produced by “The crazy Pipia” William Pipia, a great professional and a better person. Three years later I was working at the radio station.

I also listened to other stations, like The Rock & Pop, where I had the opportunity to work until I had the proposal for joining the Flaix.

Currently, I do not follow any producer, the truth I have little time, but I value the work of some I’ve heard and others that I was able to produce.

Dave Fox, a very talented producer, I appreciate it very much, he has the ability to imagine a production, voicing and producing. As him and his style, I have not heard anyone else. With Dave had the opportunity to produce Flaix Ibiza and pray to God to produce much more!

8. What would be your 3 key advice for a youngster?

If you really feel trapped by this profession, you take the most time to draw on content, to study, to listen and be predisposed to value everything, even what you do not like, in order to interpret and find a way of working that apart from the rest.

9. What is your dream work wise? Which stations do you want to image?

I would like to produce for radio stations from other countries outside of Spain, France and especially the United States.

I enjoy making all kinds of work, I enjoy it because when performing different styles of cuts do not fall into monotony. produce for major broadcast Catalunya requires that you always have this where you are, cause for transmission of FC Barcelona More importantly, I love.

In terms of sound design for video, is something that requires more time to produce radio and this production gets me, I can work a content that has nothing to do with the radio, but that too, then when to produce radio, you consider how styles are created scenes, sound environments to apply to the medium.

10. Is there a difference between spanish and english radio imaging (beside the language :)…)

To the public at Spanish English productions sound very attractive. The English radio image usually contains more speech and the production is usually more compact. Spanish identity has less speech and more productions are usually long.
