We  haven’t heard from Nic, our Australian wunderkind for a while, but guess what : He is back on the blog with another Nic Kelly Files episode! I emailed Nic and asked him, if he could create a Adobe tutorial, because we recon a big Audition fan base among the younger imaging and production guys.  Learn how to run your master real time. Enter Nic!

It’s really exciting to see a growing fan base of Adobe Audition users coming to the Benztown blog! One thing in Audition that has been a massive help to me is actually having my mastering running in real-time in the session, instead of applying it after the session. There’s a really easy way of doing this, so you can hear what the end product will sound like, as well as freeing up time and resources.

I’m doing this in Audition 1.5, but it should be similar in CEP, Audition 2.0 and 3.0.

1.    Open up a new session.

2.    Open up the FX rack for any track.

3.    In this rack, apply all the mastering settings you would normally use on your production.

4.    Save this as a preset called ‘Master A’.

5.    When you’ve saved the preset, Remove All FX from that rack.

6.    Close the FX rack and open up the ‘Playback Devices’. Depending on how you have your layout set, this may appear as ‘Out 1’ or something similar, on the left of the screen.

7.    At the bottom of that dialog, press ‘New Bus’.

8.    Make sure the output is set as what you would normally have it. Make the ‘Friendly Name’ Bus A… or whatever you choose.

9.    Under Presets, choose the ‘Master A’ we set up earlier.

10. Click ‘Apply’ then ‘OK’.

11. Click ‘Bus A’.

12. To the right of the dialog, press ‘Same for All Tracks’.

13. Press OK.

14. (Optional) File -> Default Session -> Set Current Session as Default

You now have a fully functioning real-time mastering chain!

    this is a great tip to help you save heaps of time. AA3 has a master fader already setup in its default set up, so all you have to do is load in your presets and save it as the default session.

  3. So can you still have presets on a channel, like for VO, and have the Master preset as described?

  4. In AA 1.5 when I open the Playback Devices I don’t see anything that says “New Bus”.

    chuck…it’s been a while since i’ve run on 1.5, but i’m pretty sure you can keep your vo settings in the fx rack because you’re pretty much just routing those tracks to the bus which’ll have your “master” rack.

  6. Thanks Mike… but I still cannot see where one “adds a Bus” under the Playback Devices. The screen shot is of AA3.0… wondering if it can be done in 1.5?

    i think that if you turn on the “bus” function on the lower left hand corner on the mixer view, it’ll bring up a bus fader and all you have to do after that is load your master rack into that specific fx rack.

    i hear ya man…i was running 1.5 for a long time mainly because i hated the way 2.0 was set up. but i’ve been on 3.0 since i moved to denver and i love it. the multitrack interface is pretty good and it’s really easy to navigate your routing as opposed to 1.5 (as you noticed). it’s like adobe found a nice middle ground between 1.5 and 2.0 with 3.0. i know you said you were moving over to 3.0 with the new version of source connect…what’s going on with that?

    That’s not actually my screenshot – I use 1.5. You run your master tracks on a bus routed to your output, then in addition to that run your FX rack on the track as well. They work separately.
