Whoosh Header

How often did you search for the right whoosh? I think I’m doing this every day… Until now, it was hard to create your own whooshes in a fast and efficient way without several layers and complex processing. With Whoosh from meltedsounds, a branch of the german sound designers Tonsturm, a tool was released which could end up this problem. Whoosh has just been updated to v1.1 and it gives you even more control over your created sound.

Whoosh is an Reaktor (5.8 or higher) ensemble, which comes with high quality source material by many independent SFX guys. Let’s check this killer sounddesign tool step by step:

The Samplers:
The basic signal flow starts with four Source plus one Impact Sampler. Each source sampler let’s you select from various sounds, which you can modulate in ways like playback mode or area of playback. Whoosh v1.1 let’s you randomize the selection of played samples. This brings an endless, automated variety to your whooshes! Though I recommend to turn off the randomize function for more controlled results. The Impact Sampler brings punch, harshness and a better sync possibilty to your material:

The Mixer:

All Samplers are routed to the main mixer. Here you can set the levels of each sampler, filter, and crossfade between source and impact sampler. You also got a ducking option, which let’s your source samplers sidechain compress by the impacts. Via the solo or mute buttons, you can create simple or more complex sounds.

Doppler Engine:

The Doppler Effect is where the magic happens. The combination between volume, pan, pitch and speed control is what brings Whoosh’s doppler engine on high level in terms of usability, control and output quality. You are able to let your source sounds go through in order (1-4) or random mode. The Doppler Engine is then routed to the master section with volume control and some limiter setting (crisp, firm, slow). This audio was all created by the same source material, but with different doppler engine settings:

The clean doppler view gives you a nice visualization of your created sound. Here you also can set the trigger points of each impact sound by moving the four grey rectangles.
The new version v1.1 of Whoosh brings you an immense new feature: you can “perform” your sound by using your mouse to slide, click or “scratch” in the doppler view. This opens an absolute new sound world to your ears!

Effects:
You got the possibility to send your whoosh through processing. This one has five different effects:
– Mod Delay with LFO
– Tremolo for stutter effects
– EQ
– Drive/ Saturation can give a slightly warm tone
– Compressor for less dynamic fluctuations

Conclusion:
As a nice addition Whoosh v1.1 let you import your own sounds in an easier way, to create more signature sounds. As well it is possible to control your parameters mapped to midi controller.
You can see, Whoosh brings you a level of much control and customization. Just imagine which mass of work it is if you have to set this by hand! Whoosh combines this workflow in a small tool, which gives you the opportunity to create customized sounds in a very straight forward and consolidated way – even in a rush! This saves many long hours of processing.
